MY STORY
In the summer of 2009, I saw potential in a small, 800 sq. ft. empty space in a mostly overlooked shopping center in Mid-City Baton Rouge. The landlord, Ms. Rose, offered a one year lease and a hands off approach. I figured it would it be worth any time, money and energy to get the place cleaned up and suitable to work out of. After all, working in the cramped spare bedroom of my home was not bringing any extra opportunities to my limping freelance graphic design career. So with some elbow grease and the help of good friends, drywall was hung, walls were painted, floors were laid, lights installed and I was open for business!
For over a decade, my little space on a side street in Ogden Park cultivated a community of creatives and customers. It began as my office and a place to peddle my own art. It evolved into a full blown clothing boutique and art gallery. It accommodated any art show that could fit onto the four walls it offered. It fostered my growing portfolio of DIY brands. It was a place of commune for so many great young artists just looking for a place to share their work with someone who cared.
Alas, in 2021 the time came to move on from the physical space and to take up a new challenge of existing solely in cyber space. That is where I am writing this from now. Well, technically I’m at my desk just down the street, but now everything is on shelves waiting to be picked when the next order comes through. Bricks and Bombs is now everywhere all at once; sitting at the nexus of the physical universe and the great beyond. It is a beacon in the vast sea of e-commerce just waiting to be discovered and ready to be found.
“Hello?! Is anyone there? Its me… Brad… from Bricks and Bombs. I still exist. I’m still making art. Can I interest you in a poster? Maybe a sticker? Please, somebody? Anybody?”
